Teacher Layoff Discussion: The Money Is There To Save Jobs And Stop Class-Size Increases

During Mr. Caputo-Pearl's third period class, a discussion about budget cuts and teacher layoffs took place. Here are some of the things we discussed:

- Demands to save jobs and stop class size increases.
- Putting pressure on the School Board Members and Superintendent.
- Using federal stimulus money from President Obama to aid LAUSD.
- $423 million to save jobs if used correctly by the school board.
- KEEP UP THE FIGHT! Vote YES on the May 15th one-day work stoppage.
- Teachers hesitance to go on strike due to the economy. Since teachers who go on strike do not get paid for the time they are off, they are not as likely to take part in the May 15th one-day work stoppage.

  1. Well I think that the teachers should care more about the students. And even if they dont go to the protest some of them are going get fired anyways...the teachers should stand up for there co-workers and protest against the lay-off.

  2. We must put a stop to the budget cuts and teacher layoffs. It is going to put a great amount of stress on the future kids of later 2009-2010. Classes will be full which will cause a lot of distractions for most students. I believe there should be no layoffs nor budget cuts.

  4. if you think that its a high drop out rate now and kids failing classes just wait till next year and see what happens when classes has 50 kids in it

  5. It's wrong to fire teachers when they help young people learn and grow strong minds. Children are the future, and if there are no teachers, then the future isn't going to look so bright.

  6. I think that teachers should vote yes on May 15. This would show that they care about the students and not about there money that they care about the students education ......and that getting the pinks slips is not going to get to them that they are going to keep fighting...

  7. I think that we have to keep on fighting to try and keep these teachers, and we should support the 1 day strike that they are planning. This strike will show the district that without all these teachers students are really going to suffer. Also I think that teachers should not hesitate on participating in this strike because it is their jobs taht they are fighting for. And all those teachers that aren't getting fired, they should support it because their classes will increase and they will have more trouble when teaching.

  8. I think that we should keep fighting for our teachers to keep their jobs. So our classes won't get crowded. We don't want our teachers to lose their jobs it is very unfair. So we're going to fight by doing a strike.

  9. There should be longer boycott with teachers, students, and parents united. We shouldn't only attack the board members of LAUSD but also the governor the mayor and other people that could put the pressure on these board members. Teachers should be more active in actions that are being done to change the vote of the the teacher layoffs. We students must also participate to change class size increase. Many things can be done and should be done to have a better quality of education.

  11. The teachers strike is difinetly a good tactic to get the district to see that teachers are united and care for the youths education. Students should also wake up because the lower class of L.A will be the most affected by the layoffs. Students from the South Central area have to take part of this too, by taking masive action. If we have students, teacher and parents fighting for the same cause then these budget cuts cannot pass.

  12. i think that its good that students and teachers are organizing to stop issues like, budget cuts teacher lay offs and other school issues. these issues affect the students even if they don't notice it. students, teachers and some parents are working together to prevent these issues from happening. there efforts can pay off over time with the activies that are being done.

  14. Teachers shouldnt get layedoff because most of the teachers that are getting layedoff are really helpful. To me they teach better than some other teachers in this school.

  15. I THINK THAT THE TEACHERS ARE IMPORTANT FOR ARE SCHOOL. IF THEY ARE FIRED THEY ARE NOT GOING TO TEACH US. AND WE ARE GOING TO BE DUMB FOR REST OF ARE LIFE.

  16. I definitely agree with all the comments above me. We as students need to come together and support out teachers to the best of our ability. Our teachers are our support system they are the ones who push us students to do better in life and accomplish our goals. If it takes boycotts, walk outs, protests so be it we need to take strong measures to make our points across.

  22. On the money issue I honestly feel that LAUSD and the Gov. etc.,, aren't putting any thought to the students who are going to be affected the most if they decide to lay off teachers. I feel that the goverment spends money on other things that don't benifit us as much instead of putting it into our education they spend it on things such as prison as if they are preparing us to go there. We are the future, they should invest thier money on our education, if they put us in full class rooms what do we benifit from that? Poor learning and study habits? We won't have a bright future on that road ans whos to tell that our economy will better????

Well about CP's question on the board about the student action on May 8th and what we should do....
People were talking about a walk out that day.
Well as many of us seniors know thats the day of prom, yes many seniors/students aren't attending the school dance.
But most likely the people who aren't attending prom won't be attending school either. I don't think the Crenshaw walk out will be as powerful as it could be with all of us crenshaw students.
As a school we probably wont be as powerful but teaming up with other schools will send out a strong and powerful message. So i'm neutral on the walk out situation I do agree that its a great idea but i would also want more students of crenshaw to participate in whatever we decicde to do.

  23. The answer to CP's question:
I think that Crenshaw high students should be there to support Teachers on May, 8th because i think that it’s wrong to give the teachers pink slips when they are there to help the students, I think by giving the teacher pink slips to fix the budget is not the rite solution. There is lots of other way that L.A.U.S.D can fix there budget problems. I fill that if we don’t do something now the future student to come will have even bigger problems to worry about such as, oversized classes, much more of distractions and there will be to many student for the one teacher to handle. I think that if you are able to on May 8th that you should help the teacher, while helping your self and supporting the walk-out. We will be a much stronger force if we went May 8th , rather then making up are own date, because the point is sending a strong message and which is a better way then to go in numbers !
